It will probably be lost on you and unfortunately some coaches as well, buy I will waste my time anyway. Baseball always has and always will come down to pitching and defensive support behind the pitcher. Yes, Turner failed horribly to dig the ball on several balls that were short. In fact, I was embarrassed by the lack of effort to try to lock on and make the stab. He gave up if the ball was in the dirt. If you saw the games I did, you know it's true. Statistically, the error was charged to whoever threw the ball short. No problem with that. It's the way baseball keeps stats. So "HE" didn't cost us games statistically because the error was charged to the other infielder, he also didn't "save" or "win" games by showing any tenacity to go down and stay with a throw all the way through. Even in innings where the "error" occurred did not result in the other team scoring, it definitely added on to the number of pitches our starting pitcher had to throw. Maybe you didn't pay the price in the first inning, but you damn sure paid for it in the sixth inning as your pitcher tired. Anyway, the point is, somebody has to be on first base that has the trust of the other infielders that if they just cut it loose, the first baseman will bust his ass to make the catch. That was absolutely not true last year. If the throw wasn't on the money or close, he quit.... He looked like a bullfighter with a red cape on anything in the dirt. So he didn't "cost" us any games, can we put somebody over there that might "cash" us a few games. Somebody that does make the effort and makes his infield believe in him. I am not even gonna get into the aspect of being able to handle a hot grounder down the first base line..... wow Think what you will.
