Rex Sonsteng of Jefferson the latest victim of our pussified society

Rex Sonsteng is a basketball coach at Jefferson High School in Boulder, Montana.

In probably one of the biggest chickenshit political correct moves ever, he has actually been suspended for one week because he cut a player.

The problem, or the simple answer, depending upon your perspective, is explained by the players father….. Dave Kosola, the father of the boy, alleges that Rex Sonsteng, basketball coach and math teacher, told the student because he has a learning disability he couldn’t learn the plays, and was cut for that reason.

Dave Kosola, the players father, admits that his son has mental issues and is taking part in a special program at school.

Dave Kosola contends that if the coach had cut his son because of physical limitations, there would be no problem at all, but the family took exception to Coach Sonsteng calling in to question their sons ability to learn plays even though the parents readily admit that heir son has learning issues and is currently in classes for kids that have learning issues.

Crazy, right? Maybe it was the way the coach phrased it when he cut the kid. Who knows.

So let’s look at this like sane people. A coach who has the responsibility to chose the best players he can to win the most games he can, a sane person says he picks the best players. He then cuts a player that has what he believes to be an obvious weakness, and because he doesn’t explain it “politically correct” enough, he gets suspended.

Sonsteng cut the player because he didn’t think the kid could learn the plays. What if a kid showed up at the tryouts in a wheelchair and Sonsteng cut him because he didn’t think the kid could run fast enough. Would he be suspended for that too?

This is so absurd I didn’t even want to write this post.

This guy has a long history of being a jerk. What gripes me is that they knew when they hired the guy — everybody knew he’d been fired or quit before they could fire him from three other schools. We need to let the school board know that we are tired of them scraping the bottom of the barrel when they hire teachers. And we should show up at their meetings and let them know we expect them to grow a pair and ditch Sonsteng and we won’t stop until they do.

It is bad enough that kids are bullied buy other kids but do they also need to be bullied by teachers? he did that to my son when he was in Harrison. And my son is not handicapped, he did it too alot of the kids. Then he’d sit up at the bar and brag about it but made the mistake about shooting off his mouth when one of the boys’s parents were in there. He would openenly snear at the parents that said anything, thinking they couldn’t do anything about him, but we did, we sent him down the road packing. He needs help is what he needs.

I’m one of the current players and I believe the whole thing is going way to far. Parents need to realize that the physical ability of their kid wasn’t at the level needed to be to help the team and that’s why he was cut. Get the coach back in the classroom and on the court

Hey, did you hear the outcome of the allegation? He admitted that he cut the player because of his disability not his physical. Yes let’s keep him teaching and coaching to allow this abuse go on for future students.

  4. Current JHS Senior says:

Growing up in Boulder I’ve had numerous altercations with this teacher, even before he became part of the JHS staff. One being that when my older brother was 8 years old, Mr. Songsteng called him a Nazi, because he was born in Germany (on an American base). He has openly called students stupid in his math classes, and always puts people down. And when it comes to only choosing students with skill that will help us win well, it’s Jefferson. We have 201 students. We don’t get to be picky.

  6. Anonymous JHS Student says:

As a student currently attending Jefferson High School, I can say whole-heartedly that this is absolutely ridiculous. This is NOT the first time that Mr. Rex Sonsteng has insulted and defamed a student or student organization. My sophomore year, he posted on his facebook page about how our theater teacher was invading his basketball space, because our stage is also in the gymnasium. What he didn’t realize is that Jefferson High School is NATIONALLY known for their theater department. 70% of students who graduate from Jefferson High School have been in a production during their time at the school. As an avid drama student, I found it personally insulting that he pubically announced that he held basketball in higher regard than theater. I would call it blasphmeny against the school. Also, this may just be a rumor, but I have been told by many students that the reason he was fired (or resigned) from his previous place of work was because of the same reason, calling a mentally handicapped student “retarded” – or insinuating it. Rex Sonsteng does not deserve to be a part of the JHS faculty any longer, in my opinion. He has made it abundantly clear that he does not care about the school, because if he DID, he would not harm the well-being of Braden Kosola as he has done. He is a fine teacher, but his actions have shown that he should resign/be fired. I personally don’t have any classes with the man this year, which is very lucky for the school, because if I did, I would give the man hell. I hope that he has seen the errors of his ways. I will NOT stand for bullying – especially by a teacher, who is supposed to make the students feel ACCEPTED and SAFE!

  7. Charles Bruce says:

As a student attending the school in question, I’m glad to see you haven’t a clue what you’re talking about. This was not about cutting Braden Kosola from the basketball team, but one of harassment from teacher to student. Rex Songsteng admitted to calling a child with a learning disability ‘retarded’, and saying he was ‘too stupid’ to learn the plays. Having been aquiainted with the Math teacher/Basketball coach for over two years now, and this is far from a recent development. Rex Songsteng had presumably been calling kids ‘retarded’ since the day he began working here. Jefferson High School in Boulder, MT is, for lack of a better term, small as all hell. There’s an enourmous difference between a kid being cut from the Helena High School Basketball team and our own; not all that many other kids to pick from. There’s a difference between cutting a kid from a sports team and activly ridiculing him both on the court and behind his back. This isn’t being about politically correct, this is about a TEACHER (paid from our tax dollars) bullying a child, nothing more and nothing less.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 4 Thumb down 3 (+1)

He called kids in harrison school names also. he called one boy a pussy and a girl a druggie, on and on, told the kids not to say one word to their parents what he says in class or there would be hell to pay. He was fired. the best thing that happened to harrison. Get rid of him.
