John Outlaw was the head football coach at Lufkin High School in Lufkin, Texas.
He was pronounced dead this morning at Memorial Medical Center shortly before 6:00 am, following what is presumed to be a heart attack. Outlaw was found in the kitchen of his home by his wife Francie following his daily 4:30 am jog.
Coach Outlaw took over the Lufkin Panthers in 1995, and has since become legendary in the community for his success both on and off the football field.
His third state title as a coach came in 2001 when he led the Lufkin Panthers to a 38-24 win over the vaunted Austin Westlake Chaps.
Coach Outlaw sent numerous players on to the collegiate and professional football ranks, with Dez Bryant being among that group.
Recently after winning his 300th game, Outlaw put his success in perspective.
“Three hundred is a number that really means nothing to me, When they put you in the grave, 300 wins don’t mean anything. What matters to me is each and every one of these kids out here and all the ones I’ve coached in the past.”
John Outlaw was 57 years old.
