Osvaldo Sombo was a fierce football player at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina up until a few days ago.
The story began when Sombo was arrested for rape charges back on August 11th. For obvious reasons, Sombo didn’t tell the coaching staff of the Butler Bulldogs, but the court system did.
The court system as a matter of routine sent the school district a letter informing them of Sombos arrest and pending charges one full week BEFORE he was allowed to play a big part in their season opener.
Sombo has since been transferred to an alternative school and conversely is ineligible to play for Butler until the charges are reviewed further.
The debate in Matthews is more about the inability or unwillingness of the school district to take swift action in such a serious matter.
Perhaps this incident alone wouldn’t be drawing as much attention if the school was not already immersed in controversy. Just a few weeks ago the school principal Theresa Hopkins was removed because of “a personnel investigation” according to school officials. They have further said she will not return to the school regardless of the outcome. They have yet to divulge any more details in that matter.
Back in May of this year, the school board removed girls basketball coach Stephanie Butler for recruiting violations right after she won a state basketball championship.
Christian LeMay was the star quarterback that led the Bulldogs football team to a state championship in 2009. He was suspended from playing through October for an unspecified “code of conduct” violation.
Number 1 as 2010 graduate from Butler, I can most deff say it is not a “mess”.
Our principal being basically fired for whatever reason will always be complete bs until they tell more on this “presonal investigation”.
Couch Butler is THE BEST coach i have EVER had and she has that reputaion of being the best. and with that comes people we call “haters”. And this particular “hater” (eastmeck coach) was soooo jealous and full of hatred that he took it to the lowest points of all and lied to get a rival fired. God will handle that. Coach Stephanie Butler NEVER recuited players..reall players who wanted to play better came to her to do so.
Now Osvaldo…smh…and every other black football player where ALL haha i repeat ALL gettin something from mostly the same white girl or nay other white girl at butler there was PLENTY of them. And for whatever reason white girls love them some black athletes…smh…and i always tell my fottball buddies to leave them alone but unfortunantly this is what happens when things get out of hand. Most of white girls parents are of the generation where the last thing they want to see their daughter with is a black boy……i mean..this is very tragic for him i’ll keep him in my prayers. and i just hate to see OUTSIDERS or people with IGNORANCE of any situation going on at Butler begin to make desicions off of lies…it bothers me. I’m very proud to have graduated from such a great school, thank God i did before someone came out to RUIN IT!

he still is and i giant misunderstanding should not mess up his senior ear or the potiental has has a great football player.. **unless you now the whole story don’t judge*** #PeopleLie

This whole school is a mess. There are lots more problems than what they covered in the story.
