Charles Thompson was the head basketball coach at Phoenixville High School in Pennsylvania.
He was “released” by the School District today after having been given just 4 months to make something happen with the basketball program at Phoenixville High School. Granted, his team only went 7-14 during his short stay, but it is important to remember what he had to walk in to at this school.
He was a very late hire, only getting the job in mid-November of last year. The reason for his late hire was the District had to remove the previous coaching staff for multiple rules violations.
The Athletic Director says Thompson was not released because of wins and losses, which means he WAS released because of wins and losses.
The fact most likely is that since they had to hire a coach in the eleventh hour last year, they “settled” in their own minds for a coach they could actually hire in short order, and was available to start. They clearly would not have had a very large pool of candidates in mid-November. Had Thompson been able to perform a miracle and have a winning season, he probably would have remained as coach. Now they can expand the search as more coaches are job hopping this time of year.
Charles Thompson is a good basketball coach and deserved better than being used like this.
