LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Elijah Johnson, a standout shooting guard from Las Vegas, Nev., has signed a letter of intent with Kansas.
The 6-foot-2 Johnson joins 6-8 Thomas Robinson of Washington, D.C., as the two fall signees for the defending NCAA champions.
Johnson averaged 15.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 8.9 assists for Cheyenne High and was rated as the 27th best player in the 2009 class by Rivals.com. He was also rated the fifth-best point guard.
“Right now, Elijah is not a true point guard,” said Kansas coach Bill Self. “He is a scoring, fast, active guard. He can play point but he is more of a combo than a point. We think his potential is very high and he has a chance to be a terrific player. Athletically, he will have very few equals.”
Johnson currently plays for Teral Fair at Cheyenne High and played for Pump ‘N Run last summer in AAU competition.
“Elijah is outgoing. He likes Kansas,” Self said. “He’s been out here a couple of times. I think he’s one of those guys who has always pictured himself playing here.”
