Westlake Chaparrals
The Pflugerville baseball team built a four-run lead and fought off a Westlake rally in a 7-6 victory on Friday night. The win, coupled with Pflugerville’s extra inning victory over the Chaparrals on Thursday, gives Pflugerville a sweep of it’s bi-district playoff series.
The Panthers, who also beat Westlake 8-0 in a non-district game in March, have collected three of their 19 wins this season against a Westlake team that finished the season with a 30-7 record and spent the entire year atop the American-Statesman’s power poll. Pflugerville (19-14) will now face either Lufkin of Klein Collins in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
Westlake’s early exit from the baseball playoffs was another disappointment for an athletic program that has been the Central Texas area’s best for the past few years.
During the 2010-11 school year, Westlake’s football team lost by 25 points in the bi-district playoffs, Pflugerville eliminated Westlake in the first round of the softball playoffs and a boys soccer team that reached the state tournament last year was also ousted in the playoff’s first round.
Westlake’s girls soccer and volleyball teams were the school’s only team sports to advance past the first round of the playoffs during the 2010-11 school year. The Lady Chaparral volleyball team got to the regional finals but they unable to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2007.
After hauling in 30 medals over the past five years, Westlake did not medal in any event at the state swimming meet in February and despite playing in a six-team district, neither of Westlake’s basketball teams qualified for the playoffs. The Chaparrals also didn’t qualify anyone for the state cross-country or track meets.
Westlake, however, will have a chance to win two state championships in golf this upcoming week and Casey Sutton and Robin Chou will team up for the mixed doubles competition at the state tennis tournament.
