That game was EPIC. RR and McNeil may not be the best teams in district, but they probably played the best game you will see all year. Congrats to both!

McNeil was a tighten chin-strap away from winning that game. Refs make the right call but they should have blown the whistle as soon as the runner’s helmet came off. The whole purpose of the rule is so that the runner won’t get hurt but doesn’t do any good if the refs aren’t going to blow their whistle when the helmet comes off. Anyways, it was an epic game.

          • Mav Man says:

From the Round Rock Leader newspaper:
McNeil then marched the other way, picking up a first down on Lewis’ nine-yard gain to the Mavericks 40. The visiting crowd and bench went wild when Terrell Smith took a pass from Josh Williams over the middle and broke out of a tackle without his helmet and raced the final forty yards for a touchdown while leaving his hat behind. But officials ruled the play dead where his helmet came off at the Dragons 40 with 1:18 left in the fourth. McNeil converted third and eleven with a 17-yard Williams to Mitchell toss, reaching the Round Rock 20 to set up Naylor for a 37-yard field goal with thirteen seconds showing, to send the game into overtime.

My comment: the whistle was never blown when the helmet came off which it should have been.

this is gonna be one wild season. Did everybody see how Leander went to Georgetown and just beat hell out of the Eagles. Leander hadn’t won a game all year and clobbered the team everyone picked to win district.

Then look at Westwood, they gave Stony Point all they wanted and that game could have gone either way.

And our game last night…. my god

Strap it on boys, its gonna be a bumpy ride!

gee mav man considering the dragons have won 4 of the last 5 meetings in football dating back to the 06 season (furthest back I could find) with the lone exception being last season, I’d say you clearly haven’t done your homework, and I have…ouch. Hurts when somebody who actually knows what they’re talking about makes you look an idiot huh? And for the record, football is the only sport anyone cares about really.

Three of the teams can’t score a point? Sounds like we need new quarterbacks! How can all 3 teams get shut out? Either the kids need to change their attitudes, the coaches need to change their play calling/ approach, or we just have a lot of work to do. Better luck next week! Good luck tonight Varsity Dragons!

Maroon Dragon defense should go back to tackling 101! I watched the white and maroon teams miss tackle after tackle! Dragon boys, you cannot tackle with just your arms! Break down and attack! Wrap your opponent up! No more arm tackling! Play or get off the field! I think this new head coach is too soft! He’s probably been “coached” by the RR parents/school board because the previous coach was too hard them – give me a break – it’s football!

    • talent says:

Take a look at the coaching at our feeder schools and you will find the answer. They don’t even fake an effort to make the qb position relevant. Typically the middle school coaches will find their fastest player and hand him the ball 95% of the time. A lot of times they just make him the qb to minimize fumbled handoffs.

Then they get to high school and try to figure out who has the strongest arm and thats who they look at for qb candidates, even though the pass routes we run RARELY ever require a strong arm.

After watching games this year and seeing the blocking, I would try to find a vince young type that can get the heck out of there as the protection collapses.

In summary, we don’t have pocket passers enrolling, and we cant develop them without having a pocket to pass in!

      • MGold says:

I can understand what you’re saying as far as middle school coaching. I have witnessed some pretty decent coaching and some that was terrible. However, they aren’t given a lot of time to develop anyone. Their practices are very short and they don’t have the coaching numbers to get much individual work in. Also, many of the kids entering middle school have never played organized football before (of course that kind of depends on the area where the school is; a more wealthier area generally has more kids playing Pop Warner, etc). I think “most” kids coming out of middle school are ill-prepared for high school football. Freshman year, IMO, is the critical year to transform them to get ready for JV and Varsity. Otherwise, you go with your more advanced players without much depth until the others catch up.

I was at the “palace” watching the Maroon Dragons vs Mavs game last night. From the first play you could sense trouble for the Dragons. Half the team was sleeping/uninterested/lazy what ever, they never snapped out of it. Play football or sit out! Maroon Dragons #74 and #11 need to be benched! Attitude issues and talking smack to their own team mates – WTF coaches – you have players on the team that WANT TO PLAY! I feel for the Maroon Dragons that actually want to play football and can’t because some showboat big headed punk players or blind coaches don’t give the other players a chance! Come’on what’s the deal with the Maroon Dragon QB? Hike and get the he|| out of the way…. do something for peet sake! Hand the ball off and block/get in the way/do something for the man you gave the ball to! The QB/receiver fakes are just “fake” and it’s so obvious.

The band didn’t play that night because it looked like it could rain at any second, and the drumline could not take out their new $30,000 drums and risk them getting wet, because they did not have a certain finish on them yet. If even a little water got on them, the drums would be ruined. The drumline didn’t have their drums in the stands with us either.

WOW! $30,000 for drums. Think of what other groups could get if they were allowed to work the concession stands occasionally.

      • mrwood69 says:

Well, most of the band booster’s revenue does not come from the concessions, and with that being said, the money they generate to buy these drums and other equipment does not simply show up; it takes many years of several fundraising events that the students do and other activities the boosters create at many businesses around town such as having a certain percentage of purchases from a certain business go to the band organization. It’s not what our boosters do to generate money, however how they do it.

btw the band boosters send off a lot of money to our feeder schools as well.

I think our band booster club is a very committed group of parents. It really made a difference when they caught the parent stealing funds a few years ago. That helped the profit margin.

I know its a new coaching staff, but they arent new to FOOTBALL. our offense is PUTRID. Unimaginative, poor blocking and my GOD the turnovers are KILLING US!!!

We cant do anything about our speed, but we can improve blocking skills, or change blocking schemes to fit our personnel.

And the turnovers….. simply put some guys need to ride the pine if they keep putting the ball on the ground.
